Wiki, wiki, wiki, wiki.

I love Wikipedia. I love the links to related articles, because when I'm looking up one thing, I inevitably end up learning about something I never even knew existed. The two most interesting recent examples of fascinating things I've just learned about and really wanted to share with people:

  • "And Tango Makes Three," a children's book based on the true story a pair of two male penguins who coupled up to raise a baby penguin in the Central Park Zoo. I never heard about the story, and it's inspiring. And then incredibly frustrating, once you get to the Wiki section detailing all the stupid people who tried to get libraries to hide the book from children. Found when looking at the penguins entry.
  • The Abandoned PA Turnpike - For all the miles and miles I've driven on the PA Turnpike, this is something I never knew about. Years ago, they rerouted part of the turnpike around some old tunnels, and so there is a large abandoned stretch of road in western PA. Found when a friend sent me the Wiki link for the book "The Road." Portions of the upcoming film were formed on the abandoned section.

And Tango Makes Three is a highly debated and banned book. People get all in a huff over it.

I, personally, love it.

And I have heard the tale of the Abandoned PA turnpike on PBS-WQED, but only recently. It would be awesome to find it.

GO STEELERS!!

And so there's a bit of road geek in everyone! I've heard about the abandoned PA turnpike as well, but have never visited it, unfortunately. I believe it is fairly accessible though, just off of Route 30 east of Breezewood; many folks enjoy biking on it and finding the tunnels.

And on this subject, I can't help but suggest that everyone, at least once, take the trip from Breezewood to the Irwin/Pittsburgh area on Route 30. While it takes maybe 30-45 minutes longer than the Turnpike, if you do the trip on a nice day it can be a scenic and enjoyable ride, and a pleasant change of pace from the monotony of the turnpike.

Go Steelers!
